Jacob Glatstein is a yiddish poet who is going home to Poland from New York to see his sick mother on her death bed. At this time, he is in an internal stage of mind and reflection. He was known as a modernist for his experiment with language and internal drama. He was also a founder of a poem movement in NY. He utilized in Zikh which was introspection into oneself. This story takes place in a resort outside of Lublin city. Here, they are surrounded by nature. This allows for a healing and renewal spa culture. City living was unhealthy at the time and this was their escape to the countryside. Nature was now an escape from work place and city which was new. In the past, nature had the place of work and labor as seen in the film“Green Fields”. Nature was now a sight of recreation, leisure, and healing. Everyone at the resort had an eye on Germany and the events that were unfolding, for example Hitler’s purge. There was now a sense of shattered nerves that need to be restored. A juxtaposition of beauty of nature with cruelty and violence of humans occurred. Reflection was occurring on the depth of the Jewish influence in Poland. This story did a wonderful job overlaying personal tragedy with the national tragedy at hand.
